If you've been a little disappointed lately with your coffee experience at Starbucks, you're not alone. Today, Starbucks closed all 7,100 national locations for three hours as the company re-educated its more than 135,000 baristas on how to make the perfect cup of coffee. According to a recent press release, this unprecedented training, is designed to transform the company and reignite its connection with customers.
As an instructional designer, I find myself wondering what other training initiatives are available for the 135,000 baristas employed by Starbucks. Could a web based learning solution have minimized the lost revenue that resulted from closing 7,100 stores for three hours? For the most part, when training is delivered in person, the event is a one time deal.
